Tiny Love Stories

I am obsessed with the New York Times Style section feature "Tiny Love Stories." They are 100 words or less and cover all kinds of love, loss, and heartbreak. Today I submitted one of my own love stories, about my beloved Lab mix Jake, who lived to be 16 years old. He was a soul mate of sorts, and our love was deep and wide. Here's what I submitted:

The first time he was supposed to die, he was 13 years old. The vet said cancer, a death sentence. But he was wrong, and Jake lived, because he was loved.

The second time was more serious. His white blood cells attacked his red blood cells and killed them all. He was bleeding internally. 30% chance to live, they said. But they were wrong, and Jake lived, because he was loved.

The third time, the most serious of all. Seizures wracked his body. He might live, they said. But they were wrong, and Jake died, because he was loved.

It's amazing how enormous the heart is when it comes to the furry creatures in our lives. Wonderful 100 words! Jake was a lovebug.
